Evolving Sustainable Humane Habitats: Critical Lessons of New Cities, Towns and Communities
20th Century was an era for rapid industrialization and urbanization. In the wake of rapid economic development, it ushered in an era of social change. Yet, this process was uneven, in Europe it led to two World Wars resulting in large scale destruction and unprecedented death toll. The rebuilding of Europe and destroyed towns, cities and communities marked the process of rapid urban development. Many colonies were granted independence after a long period of colonization. The newly independent countries launched programmes of national development and modernization and industrialization.
Architects responded to this need for social development through revolutionizing their own profession, education and extended their range of concern and services. Planning and urbanism became one of their prime concerns. Revolutionary ideas, futuristic proposals for urban development preceded building of new cities, towns and communities.
Brasilia, Chandigarh, Islamabad, Gandhinagar, Navi Mumbai, to name a few, these cities were big leaps in planning of human settlements. Now more than 40-50 years of their existence, one can take a critical look back to identify the issues and lessons learnt. We also have examples of many a new city and town being built in the 21st century. How do they compare with the new cities of the 20th century?
The 14th International Conference on Humane Habitats (ICHH) 2012 shall focus on these policies, programmes, rules, regulations and bye-laws, development, planning and urban design projects and case- studies to evolve strategies for development of Sustainable Humane Habitats.
